Q: I was wondering where i could get some of the Emu Oil you suggested ?

A:You can purchase Emu Oil many places online. For your convenience you can purchase at our online store at
Personalized for Pets in the Puppy Necessities Section Always be sure to look for Pure Australian oil that is okay for internal use; do not use cosmetic grade oils.

Q: My Chin sometimes makes noises like she's choking or can't breathe. It lasts a few minutes then she seems fine. What is this and should I be concerned?

A: Reverse sneezing and trachael collapse are two different things entirely from the research I've done. Paroxysmal respiration is often described as a "reverse sneeze" because it really does look as if a dog is trying to inhale a sneeze when this occurs. What many small breeds have is termed 'reverse sneezes'. This is a misnomer, for it has nothing to do with actual sneezing. However, it is a popular term for something that appears to be worse than it actually is. When this occurs, your Chin will appear to be snorting or choking. The posture will be one of the neck extended with the chest expanded, as the dog struggles to take in air. The actual physiology is that the trachea has narrowed and the normal amount of air is not able to enter the lungs. The triggering mechanisms are usually excitement or stress. These should only happen on occasion and should decrease with age from our experience. If you either plug her nostrils or soothingly stroke her upper throat area to encourage relaxation and dilation of the trachea the attack should stop immediately. A dog is able to come out of an attack of reverse sneezing without help if you aren't there so there is no need to worry and will not suffer permanent damage. Often times the small flat faced breeds have these types of issues due to the facial structure and small nasal passages. There are some procedures that can be done to widen the nasal passages but I've never found it necessary.

Q: Can anyone explain to me what makes the difference between the red and white and the sable and white. I sable meant that there are black hairs in the red areas. Someone told me that the only difference is the color of the nose - sable's are black, reds are brown.

A: First let me say there are only two colors of noses for a Japanese Chin, black and the rare red nose. All black/white Chins should have black noses and only a true red/white Chin may produce a red nose. The sable coat is the result of breeding red/white with black/white coat colors at some point in the heritage of your Japanese Chin. A sable coat will start off as very dark brown as a newborn which will begin to lighten over the months and eventually become some shade of reddish-brown. How much black is in the coat varies between individual puppies. Some sable coats have spots of black at the tips of the ears, around the face, on the tail or down the spine. Most of the time the black is overtaken by the lighter color hair and is hardly noticeable at all. Some sable Chins do not have any visible black hair as adults even though they may have been dark brown as puppies. A true red/white coat does not have any black hair in it. A red/white can vary from very light orange to a deep red. Some red/white puppies will appear all white as newborns with the coat darkening as they grow older. These coats can remain a blondish-lemon color which we call Lemon and White or become a true red/white.

Q: How many puppies does a female Japanese Chin usually have in a litter?

A: A Chin has an average of 3 puppies per litter. They can have up to 5 and it is not uncommon for them to have 1 or 2 as well. A smaller female Chin weighing under 7 pounds generally will only carry 2-3 puppies whereas a larger 9-10 pound female will average 4-5 per litter.

Q: I have a 6 month old Japanese chin. I was wondering why she doesnt have to much hair right now? I mean she has a lot around the ears and tail but i was expecting more around the stomach & legs..When did your puppy's hair fully grow in or become long?

A: Japanese Chins will go through many stages until they are around 2-3 years of age. Depending on your Chins coat color and your Chins heritage .. coat thickness and length can vary. All Chins start off with very soft fuzzy and fluffy coat. This will change at about 4-6 months as the new coat grows in. Black/white coats and some of the very lightest coat colors grow in the same color that the coat will always remain however sable coats can start off much darker and end up very light. Most b/w coats will grow in faster and thicker than the lighter colors. A female will also shed her coat twice a year so sable and may never reach the same length and thickness of her male counterparts. Some lighter Chin coat colors do not reach their full length until several years of age and some may remain short always (usually southern Chins). A sable/white Chin will start off with a dark brown coat that will have shiny black hairs and fuzzy reddish brown hair. As the coat changes in the early months the fuzzy hair will be replaced with lighter reddish-brown hair and most of the black hair will blend in and be unnoticeable except for around the ears or possibly the face and/or tail.

Q: I currently have a one-year old male Chin. He is the sweetest dog with a very mild temperament. We are considering getting a second Chin and was wondering if it matters if it's a male or female. If I get a second male, I'm afraid they'll fight and be aggressive towards each other. Would a female be better?

A: In our experience it doesn't make that much difference but to be safe you should probably go with the opposite sex. Most male Chins are fairly docile and very agreeable and really don't look to start fights. In our experience two females are a lot less likely to get along than two male Chins.
